Immanuel you inform my sense of self...

Although today his thoughts are commonplace, and his observations apparently mundane...this is only due to the power of his thoughts over time. Kant is truly a turning point for human thought....one of the first clear view of what thinking actually is...

It was Kant who let us know, that we are the creators of our own reality, not simply the puppets of an independent world. When I explained to my teenage daughter, that the reason the guy in front of us seemed to be driving so slowly...was because we were in a hurry...this was Kant's influence on my understanding of my self.

As far as this particular audio program goes, I would give the presentation a B generally, and an A for a philosophy program. Dry but with oasis of depth and clarity. Its a good listen...especially when your driving, and can't fall asleep. LOL

This book is a complete history of exorcism and possession that starts in the primitive cultures and ends with modern day possessions. This is NOT a trash book on Hollywood exorcist movies! The book is a very historic history on possession and exorcisms.
The book should be a required reference book for any serious student of possession and exorcism! We I teach the subject of possession, this is a required text!

Understanding the complex situation in an area we know little about

Bertil Lintner is very skilled in taking you by the hand through a complex and mostly unknown area of the world. His analysis and insight gives you a fresh look on recent history. Sometimes the vast number of abbreviations is confusing, but the result is a great learning experience.

New shadow war in East Asia

The work by Swedish journalist deals with problems in India’s turbulent north east and China’s involvement in it. China is India’s powerful neighbor and bitter rival. Beijing is always seen working against India’s core strategic interests and has always sought ways to diminish New Delhi’s influence in her neighborhood. This tussle for power and influence in the region has been labeled by the author as new Great Game East. It is strikingly reminiscent of strategic rivalry between British Empire and Czarist Russia for the control of Central Asia.

China has viewed the presence of Tibetan leader Dalai Lama and his government- in- exile in India as an hostile act and existential threat. Beijing has retaliated by supporting insurgent groups - Manipuri and Naga – operating in the India’s north east. At this point, however, author makes an interesting observation Chinese did not create this problem. Many peoples of the north east (Nagas , Manipuris, Mizos even Assamese ) have yet not reconciled to accession of their provinces to the Indian Union. Manipuris in particular believe that their rajah was tricked into joining Indian Union. So Chinese have exploited the resentment these peoples have for India to the hilt. Indians could respond by applying pressure on China’s underbelly. Regions like Tibet , Xinjiang have not properly integrated with China. Whether New Delhi has the will to do this is another matter.

Over the years New Delhi has resorted to complex mixture of measures to control, if not end, the insurgencies raging in the north east. In this respect role played by RAW is particularly laudable. Author has words of praise for RAW( the Indian intelligence). RAW is the acronym for Research Analysis Wing. Plenty of documentation is available on Mossad, KGB, CIA . However RAW , according to author, has cloaked its activities in a veil of secrecy. Further, author is of the opinion, Indians were no novice to the field of espionage and had practised it from time when people of Europe lived in caves. 4 core principles Shama ( political reconciliation) Dhana ( monetary inducement) Dand ( force) Bhed ( split ) applied by RAW in its covert war were straight taken out of the book Arthashastra by Kautiliya , a great practioner of statecraft who lived more than 2000 years ago.

Recently rivalry between two nations has spread to neighboring Burma and Indian Ocean. Here a few things have to be borne in mind. Chinese have a high profile presence in Burma where her interests are primarily strategic. Beijing wants an outlet to the sea for her landlocked province of Yunnan. China has invested considerable sums of money in improving Burma’s poor road infrastructure and in exploration, development and production of that country’s oil and natural gas reserves. But of late military regime’s attitude toward her big neighbor has changed. Relations with India and the western powers have improved as Rangoon seeks to reduce her dependence on China. Beijing is certainly not happy by those developments.

Few things which made profound impression in me were the developments in the Andaman sea . First of course is the installation of radars and electronic listening posts in Cocos islands for intercepting Indian naval communications and for collecting telemetry data on Indian missile tests conducted along the Orissa coast. In 1994 Indian coast guard intercepted and apprehended some fishing vessels close to Indian naval base in the Andaman Sea. The vessels were carrying Burmese flag but her crew was all Chinese. The vessels did not carry fishing equipment but had radio communication sets, depth sounding gear. Nature of their job could easily be surmised. These men were on a covert mission to measure depth of sea floor near India’s military installations in the Andaman Islands.

Suddenly the idyllic Andaman Sea has become important to the maritime defense of India, a fact brought home by another development, smuggling of weapons for insurgent groups operating in the India’s north east. Alarmed by these developments New Delhi has established a new integrated command of the armed forces in the region called FENC (Far Eastern Naval Command). Author concludes his work by claiming moving away from Himalayas the Indian Ocean Region (IOR) would soon become bone of contention between the two nations.

However despite all the saber rattling I don’t see any prospect of an armed conflict with China. Both nations in the years to come would continue poking at each other detrimental to peace and stability of the region

Heart-wrenching insight into the life of women in Iran

Kooshyar Karimi is now a doctor in Australia. I listened to his interview with Richard Fidler on ABC radio and have since wanted to read this book.
This book tells the story of two main characters living in Iran - Leila and the doctor.Their lives are connected through a plea from Leila to the doctor for his assistance with an unwanted pregnancy, which in this society has placed her life at risk.
The Doctor, the author himself, has had an impoverished start to life, but with the encouragement of his highly ambitious mother has been educated and is currently an author, translator and a doctor. He is Jewish and married to a Muslim woman. He has taken his life in his hands by developing a reputation for helping with terminating pregnancies, a practice of which he says he would normally not approve , but feels is justified in order to save the lives of the females involved, who may otherwise face death from their brothers, father or others. In most cases the pregnancies have resulted from sex without consent.
Leila is a little different from the other women, and we are told the story of her life through her own eyes. She is the second daughter in a very traditional Muslim family where she is treated like a slave by her father and brothers. She is obviously a very intelligent and curious woman and has a strong desire for further education, but her father has not allowed this pursuit. As a consolation, she has taken to reading and visiting the library regularly. This is her only unaccompanied venture from her home allowed. It is on her journey from the library that she meets and falls in love with someone who will cause her great pain and distress.
As the author states at the start of the book, this is based on true characters and real events. It is hard to comprehend the complete lack of options and choices that are available to these women.
It is a book which was absolutely compelling and was difficult to put down. It is both heart-wrenching and heart-warming at the same time. It is beautifully written and well-told.

A compelling read on a very sensitive subject

I wanted to write to the author after reading this book as it moved me so much. Beautifully written about such a taboo subject. It was awful to read how these poor girls live, not only in fear of their parents but the stigma of becoming pregnant and unmarried was fearful. A compelling read from start to finish, well done Kooshyar karimi

This book grabbed my heart and mind, the detail sometimes so explicit and other times so beautiful I felt the torment of Leila. A necessary story to open our eyes to the differences between a life of freedom and a life of no choice. Thank you for gifting me with this insight

The breezy narrative follows one boy through a typical day, highlighting many interesting aspects of his world. Fanciful cartoon drawings show a lively and appealing world full of new and intriguing activities that correspond neatly to modern equivalents. Schools are now made from plasticized blocks that snap together, for example, while recess features virtual batting practice and a "smart trampoline." Recreational activities include magnetized hovering skateboards and a virtual-reality "Fanta-trek Center." Some social changes are briefly noted, such as new career paths and the increase of marriages between different ethnicities. Interaction with the natural world is not mentioned, although many of the new technologies have eco-friendly components and the food is all meatless and delicious. Illustrated sidebars provide a bit of additional information or background, but the emphasis here is more on what new technologies will do, rather than how they will work. The one exception to the fun comes in an inset paragraph about overpopulation and starvation in Africa, a jarring bit of realism in this otherwise worry-free existence. Great for kids

I read this book to a class of fourth graders. They thought that it was very easy reading, but they loved it. I like that you can read the main story line in about 15 minutes, and then interested kids can go back and read the detailed sidebars later to learn more about particular technologies.

The White Lioness is an excellent novel by Henning Mankell. It centers on his character Swedish Police officer Kurt Wallender and an assassination plot in South Africa. The setting is both in Sweden and in South Africa. In addition to being an excellent crime novel it is also a stark commentary on the politics in South Africa in the late 1990s. If you are a fan of the Wallender crime novel series this is one you should not miss.

Light Summer Reading for the Mentally Insane

Andersen never fails to deliver in my humble opinion, but then again, I worship the devil. All I can say is that you'll be bursting with sunshine after reading this. It's about a boy. A boy and his pinata. I got so hungry for candy while reading this, that I ate an entire big bag of M&M's.

Prunty at his best!

Andersen Prunty isn't for the weak of stomach, but his horror is imaginative, creepy, funny, and at times stomach turning. This book has all of those things and more. He has a surreal way of depicting horror in the most banal settings; the evil of everyday, if you will. Normal people finding themselves in the midst of terror, and what I love the most is that you never know if the people are crazy, or merely the situation. Hallucinatory images abound, giving everything an off-kilter feel, and making it hard to put the book down.

The story is hard to describe without giving too much away, so I'll sum it up: two schmoe's come up with a fool-proof robbery plan, thanks to a girlfriend with inside connections, and things go terribly wrong. There's a pi�ata filled with something more sinister than candy, Daft Punk type musicians, space birds and a happy dose of pills.

One of Prunty's Best

I honestly didn't know what I was getting into when I started this book. I'm a longtime fan of Prunty's work and haven't been disappointed yet, so when I read the title, THE WARM GLOW OF HAPPY HOMES, I knew I'd be in for a treat. I just didn't know that "treat" would entail. But I found out.

Oh, I found out.

I would rank THE WARM GLOW OF HAPPY HOMES among Prunty's best work. At the same time though, it easily takes the cake as one of his most disturbing. Picture a blend of American Psycho and Chad Kultgen's THE LIE, but more stripped down and intense, and featuring space birds, explosions of light, pinatas, hallucinations, a rad party, a botched heist, and candy-stuffed body cavities. Hysterical. Insane. Un-put-down-able. I don't know how else to describe this book. Buy it. Bathe yourself in the warm glow and question what is real.

Advocating a perception-based mode of thinking free from rigid rationality, de Bono ( Six Thinking Hats ) hopes this manual will "signal the start of a New Renaissance." He argues that "our existing thinking culture" overemphasizes rote logic and simplistic labeling of behaviors as right/wrong or always/never. Deeply suspicious of language as a tool for argument or persuasion, he likens the brain to a "self-organizing system" that generates patterns, and he calls for a new "lateral thinking" to liberate the mind from the shackles of language-dependent thought. "Water logic," adaptive and imaginative, will replace our confrontational, repetitive "rock logic." Traditional ("rock logic") thinking is no longer sufficient to deal with today's political, economic, and social concerns, according to author and psychologist de Bono. While classical reasoning may sometimes serve us well, it fails in its assumption that perception is absolute. De Bono presents a model of the brain as a self-organizing system that forms and uses patterns. Behavior in this system is driven by perception that varies according to circumstance. De Bono urges the use of thinking techniques (e.g., provocation, lateral thinking) that encourage creativity and alternative designs. While the author occasionally belabors some points, his vision for a future that acknowledges the limitations of logic and emphasizes the importance of perception merits serious attention. A deceptively simple but consistently provocative appeal for perceptual (as opposed to structured) thinking from the author of Six Action Shoes (the trifle reviewed below), Tactics (1984), and several other works dealing with powers of the mind. As before, de Bono (an M.D. who no longer practices) challenges traditional Western thought processes on grounds that they are unequal to the task of solving the Global Village's many pressing problems. According to the author, orthodox methods of thinking are based on absolutes, a rigid insistence on facts, and other unproductive habits dating back to an ancient time when truth seekers like Aristotle relied on reason or its corollaries (analysis, logic, etc.) to free themselves from the bonds of dogma. While essentially adversarial methods are fine for achieving technological gains or winning arguments, de Bono says, such systems lack the originality and creativity required to deal with socioeconomic as well as political affairs. Describing the human brain as a self-organizing marvel, the author makes a strong case for what he calls ``water logic,'' a purportedly natural activity of the physical organ's neural network. By de Bono's account, water logic represents a fluid approach that provides the basis for new ideas, humor, insights, poetry, and other of civilization's more fruitful pleasures. On occasion, de Bono can be decidedly arbitrary in advancing his theories. Without much supporting evidence, for example, he dismisses language as a trap and characterizes humor as the intellect's most significant behavior (owning mainly to its asymmetry). In aid of breakthrough conjecture, however, the author is never less than thought-provoking, and his witty, allusive text is notable for its wealth of illuminating digressions. Learn How To Think, And Then Do It

If you're interested in learning what the brain does without having to memorize lists of neurotransmitters and sections of neo-cortex, this is the book for you. De Bono is a genius at making a complex subject completely accessible to the average reader. For example, he avoids involved anatomical terminology altogether by using the metaphor of an octopus in place of a neuron. Learning how the brain works by imagining a beach full of glowing, smelly octopuses is a more efficient mnemonic device than a dry, "scientific" treatment. The rest of the book addresses the problems we humans have in trying to deal with everything "logically" without real logical tools, and thinking that everything can be "solved" through language, analysis, and confrontation. My way of thinking was enriched by De Bono's introduction of paradox, humor, and intuition to provoke creative thinking. And he takes on more than a few of philosophy's sacred cows while he's at it. The idea of "catchment" as a model of our automatic compartmentalization of new data is alone worth the price of the book.

The Key To Understanding Human Behavior

I found this book to be extremely useful to my understanding of human behavior. I have been reading extensive psychological literature in order to formulate a useful model to understand how humans in organizations react to proposed change. I want to use that model to help them create positive change. Most of the literature on organizational change is anecdotal support of an approach that once worked somewhere. (Exception: Chris Argyris) DeBono starts with the fundamental mechanism of how the brain works to understand the behavior people exhibit. This understanding has enabled me to formulate much more effective approaches to individual and organizaitonal change. You do have to think hard to understand deBono's underlying messages. It may be difficult if this is the first deBono book you read, or if you have not been digging for a solution to a specific problem. But, I give it a 5+!

A concise explanation of a complex subject.

This book stands out as one of the best explanations of how the mind works, and doesn't work, and how to make make the best use of your own. He destroys in a few paragraphs a lot of deeply entrenched misconceptions that western society has been operating under for centuries. I've seen a lot of other long and wordy attempts that fail to get half as far as De Bono has in this little book. It's densely packed with concepts, each touched on just long enough to give the reader the main points, without all the flowery self-indulgent nonsense that so many other writers of books for the lay person love to fill their pages with. De Bono gets to the point. And good points they are! Excellent book.

A book of plans for browsing

As others have noted, this book is actually a reprint of an old collection of plans. The techniques used in construction are very traditional; no plywood, epoxy or synthetic bedding compunds found here. It's not a beginner's book, either, although a careful craftsman could probably build the first one or two boats with a little thought.
But even if you never built any of these boats-- and I suspect most who buy the book fall into this category-- this volume is still a wonderful addition to the bookshelf. I bought my copy before I knew anything about boat construction, and the more I learn, the more I enjoy casually thumbing through it. At the price, it's a bargain; I'd recommend it to anyone with an interest in boat design, or traditional construction, or who just likes looking at boat plans.

A fun, old book, but not a practical how-to guide.

I enjoyed the book and agree with the reviewer who said it is a must for anyone's collections. The book is not, however, what, from the title and the reviews, I believed it would be. This is not a practical guide for novice boat builders.
This how-to guide is an unabridged republication of a book originally published in 1934. Much of the advice is dated. Sixteen horsepower outboards are no longer suitable for racing boats. To build a stream box, it is no longer practical to look for an old "stove boiler" (whatever that is) abandoned on a vacant lot. The author never mentions power tools. And the section on legal requirements for a new boat bears a publisher's footnote indicating that the information has not been updated in 65 years and may no longer be right. The author also assumes that the reader already has extensive knowledge about boats. For example, it seems that almost every board and plank on a boat has a unique name to boat builders, and the author uses those terms throughout the book, but nowhere does he provide a diagram of a boat with all of the various parts labeled.
I enjoyed reading this book the same way that I enjoy reading old newspapers: as a snapshot of the past and as a work that occasionally provides new insights. I imagine that an experienced boat builder could find much in the book that is useful, and at a bargain price. This is not, however, a practical how-to guide, at least not for novices.

No, you won't become an accomplished boat builder simply by picking up this little book, or any other for that matter. Respect this beauty for it's glimpse at tradition provided by an underappreciated master of a dying trade.
This book includes lines and offsets for 16 boats. Good boats. Where can one find plans for a stunning example of a 125 class step hydro, or a well proportioned little full keel sloop for the paltry sum of the cover price of this book? Only getting started? Check out the pram, the punt, or the skiffs.
Monk's designs are relevant even in these days of design software and chopper guns. If you are an aspiring boatbuilder, this book can help you to learn respect for the old timers and their ways. If you're an accomplished boat builder in search of a worthwhile project, this book provides many. All of these designs are adaptable to current methods and materials by the experienced builder.
A wonderful design compilation. Get a different book to learn how to sharpen those shiny new chisels. Enjoy.

Volumes 1-3 complete the picture from JLA issue #1

I really enjoyed reading Grant Morrison's work on JLA. Reading through these Deluxe Editions has been my first time reading through the series. I liked it pretty well. This volume is the last book with a portion of the cover of JLA #1 on its binding. If you want to complete the image for when the books stand on your shelf you only need volumes 1-3. After that the volumes feature solo images of JLA members on the binding. If you care about that, you might want to stop collecting the volumes here, unless you want the rest of Morrison's run which is continued in Volume 4 (w/ Superman on the binding) or if you want to collect the entire JLA series for your library.

Could be the best book but...

The Starro storyline was pretty awesome. There is even a cameo of the Sandman, The Lord of Dreams. Very well executed, fun and exiting.
The Ultramarines story was also pretty cool. I was surprised how the JLA, as powerful as it is, got their asses kicked almost the whole book. Pretty fun!.
Crisis Times Five was a JLA/JSA crossover. It was great to see the old and new generation of superheros together. It was a mess dimensional flick but it paid off completely.
Why I give it only 4 stars?. The 1'000,000 issue had absolutely NOTHING to do there. Is an issue without begining nor end. I didn't enjoyt it at all.

Besides this, the book is awesome.
