If you ever wonder what the emerging church is read this

I am not an emergent church guy, but this book clearly explains how the church can move forward through the emerging postmodern era. I had never previously read Kierkegaard but this book really makes me want to. The book is dense, so bring your highlighter, but you will enjoy it and it will challenge your faith and bring hope to you for the future of the church!

Emerging Movement

Kyle Roberts does so much more than simply relate Kierkegaard to the Emergent Movement. I'm not an emergent guy, while I don't really have anything against the movement either. Over the years, however, while progressing in my theological studies, I've come to embrace many of the emergent themes that Roberts highlights in his book. There are many evangelicals, who, while remaining rooted in the movement, are concerned about the changes that are needed within evangelicalism and are looking forward to the new movement that will eventually emerge out of this desire for change. What this new movement will look like is hard to say, but it will probably be comprised of both post-evangelicals and post-liberals as well as people from other perspectives. In my eyes the Emergent Movement is an early harbinger of what is to come. What will eventually emerge might well be more moderate, but will certainly embrace many of the values cherished by the Emergent Church.

As such "Emerging Prophet" does much more than telling the emergent movement how meaningful Kierkegaard can be for them. What Roberts is really after—if I read the book correctly—is to argue that things really need to change in the evangelical camp. That it's modernist epistemology and its resultant handling of the Bible, formation of ethics, witness, and engagement with the world is flawed and out of date. Out of date because we have entered the postmodern era and have left the constantinian church behind us; flawed—and this is the really important thing—because the way evangelicalism has become completely dependent upon the modernist paradigm is detrimental to its fidelity to the message of Christ and its authentic witness in the world.

Kyle Roberts is using Kierkegaard to argue his case and rightly so. Not only is Roberts a Kierkegaard scholar, but Kierkegaard's thought speaks directly into the situation of today. Kierkegaard was a postmodern avant la lettre, but what is more, he is a prophet who calls a church that has integrated nationalism and politics too much with its ecclesial identity to repent and return to a radical discipleship of Jesus Christ.

"Emerging Prophet" is well written, easily accessible for lay people, and therefore in my opinion, because of its subject matter, mandatory reading for any evangelical who is concerned with the movement they belong to and love. Evangelical christians need to read this book. Period.

Very insightful

As a philosophy major, it is easy to see the weaknesses in the rhetoric of many emergent church leaders. Many lack a properly grounded understanding of postmodernist epistemology. Roberts thoroughly expounds the role Kierkegaard's work has in the emerging church and gives many fundamentalist evangelicals reason to rethink their own positions. One of the most interesting sections is that on John Caputo's interaction with Derrida's deconstructivist ideas concerning forgiveness and justice. Overall the book was well researched. The parallel between Kierkegaard's striving for authenticity in his own time and the need for authenticity today for the Christian is clearly articulated. This is a must read and I would gladly read anything else Kyle Roberts publishes.

Purgatorio is the second volume in this set and opens with Dante the poet picturing Dante the pilgrim coming out of the pit of hell. The English prose is arranged in tercets to facilitate easy correspondence to the verse form of the Italian on the facing page, enabling the reader to follow both languages line by line. In an effort to capture the peculiarities of Dante's original language, this translation strives toward the literal and sheds new light on the shape of the poem. Again the text of Purgatorio follows Petrocchi's La Commedia secondo l'antica vulgata, but the editor has departed from Petrocchi's readings in a number of cases, somewhat larger than in the previous Inferno, not without consideration of recent critical readings of the Comedy by scholars such as Lanza (1995, 1997) and Sanguineti (2001). As before, Petrocchi's punctuation has been lightened and American norms have been followed. However, without any pretensions to being "critical", the text presented here is electic and being not persuaded of the exclusive authority of any manuscript, the editor has felt free to adopt readings from various branches of the stemma. One major addition to this second volume is in the notes, where is found the Intercantica - a section for each canto that discusses its relation to the Inferno and which will make it easier for the reader to relate the different parts of the Comedy as a whole.

Robert M. Durling is Professor Emeritus of English and Italian Literature at the University of California, Santa Cruz. Ronald L. Martinez is Professor of Italian at Brown University. Purgatorio is Pretty Interesting

In the second volume of Dante's Divine Comedy, Purgatorio, Dante continues his journey from hell into purgatory, continuing to be guided by the skilled hand and mind of Virgil. Dante must climb up the Mount of Purgatory, beginning at the bottom with Ante-Purgatory, then the seven terraces - seven levels of suffering and spiritual growth - as associated with the seven deadly sins; at the very top is Earthly paradise. Just as in the first volume, Inferno, Dante continues to discuss politics and the Church in general, as well as relating to his own experiences during the writing of the Divine Comedy in the fourteenth century. Familiar characters in Dante's life again play a part, as he makes his intentions of them all too clear. It is in this volume that Dante is reunited with his long-lost love, Beatrice.

In this shorter introduction, Robert M. Durling and Ronald L. Martinez go into some detail on when this second volume was likely begun, how and when it was exactly written and how Dante was influenced by events and happenings in his life in the writing of it. Just as with the first volume, detailed notes are provided at the end of each canto, explaining locations, historical references, and short biographies on the people mentioned and what relevance they had to Dante. With these priceless details, any reader can pick up this translation of the Divine Comedy, and not feel lost or overloaded by all the historical setting, peoples and details, but are skillfully guided along Dante's unique journey.

At the end of the text are further detailed notes and fifteen short essays covering Dante's political views, his respect and use of Virgil and Ovid, his original conceptions of homosexuality, and on moral growth, to name a few. Durling and Martinez also explore similarities and possible linkages with the three volumes in analyzing similar cantos, their possible relations to each other, as well as the numbering system used in each volume. At the end is a bibliography and extensive index, allowing the reader to travel about the text freely and with little hindrance.

With this second volume, Durling continues what he began with Inferno, keeping the reader hooked with this accurate translation, along with the original Italian on the left-hand page, as Dante's true skill as a storyteller and descriptive writer are brought to light as never before.

Great Literary Work and Staple in for Anyone Studying Italian

I took a class on all of Dante's divine comedy and absolutely LOVED it! I was an Italian minor in college and so I really looked forward to this as it's a super important literary work and a staple in Italian art, literature, and culture.

This was definitely the middle of the three books in terms of how much a liked it, but is still a great literary work. I don't know how someone could just read one of the books and not finish all three. As for the translation, I though it was very accurate. My professor spoke fluent Italian and English and he seemed to find this translation very useful. He also has a doctorate in Italian literature so I really trust his opinion, a very intelligent man who knows the Divine Comedy inside and out.

I think a lot of the complexity of this work was lost on me because I never intensely studied literature. However, my class had half literature majors and they offered really great insight into this work as a whole.

The Best Translation Yet

I have owned several editions of The Divine Comedy but this edition translated by Martinez and Durling is the best I have seen so far. I am able to read some degree of the original Italian by Dante and feel that I can make a reasonable comparison of this new translation with previous ones. Now, I look forward to acquiring the Martinez and Durling translation of the Paradiso in the paperback edition as soon as it is available.

Not Stupid by Any Means...Gems for Life

Mr. Ofili has written a gem of a book filled with pearls of wisdom. He shares with readers 18 ways to have a better life by making the right choices. His conclusions are underscored by news stories, anecdotes, and moments from his own life when he realized that he was doing something wrong and that there was a better way to handle the situation.

I appreciate how candidly he drew from his own experiences and lightened up the book with humor. I enjoyed his funny and telling sketches to illustrate (literally) his points. I liked the stories that tackled tough issues, from growing up in another culture, racism, a tendency to overanalyze, and financial challenges, among others. While the life's lessons the author shared are grounded in common sense, he packaged them in an easy-to-read, thought-provoking book. His stories made me want to know more about his personal life, but I'll have to wait for him to share more if he writes a follow-on book.

If there's any reason to give this book 4 out of 5 stars, it's because it ends before you know it, and the wisdom he imparts is quite fleeting. It's not the kind of book that those seeking help to change their own lives can rely on for solid advice. The author does not take enough time to help the reader apply it to their own lives or even sink in. It's a great read for what it offers. His advice might not be equally applicable to all, but he left it up to readers to decide if they agree with his advice. Not everyone is an engineer or has an engineer's mind (myself included), but his anecdotes cut across a wide demographic.

I recommend this book to anyone who prefers to learn life's lessons from others than the hard way -- on their own.

This isn't a self help book, but it sure gives you a lot of help!!!! The authors narration of his personal experiences gives one a lot to think about. A very good read, well written and it can save your life too.

A Must Read for Film Camera Enthusiasts

This is a great book for anyone interested in enhancing their knowledge about film photography. I'd recommend it for anyone interested in purchasing and using a film camera. Just as the title suggests, this book is about the camera itself. There's a useful chapter on lenses that will help you decide which type of lens to buy for your shooting needs. Plus there's a good chapter on image management: how to compose shots to create visually interesting photographs.

I've read all three books in this series, and while they do lean on the technical side I still consider them essential references for film camera enthusiasts.

Excellent introduction to the camera

I bought this book after taking a photo class at a local community college and was attempting to start on the trail of becoming a serious amateur photographer. This book was _exactly_ what I needed.
It explains all the details of all the modern cameras you are likely to find. Small, Medium and Large format cameras. Think a pinhole camera is the best? It isn't, and the plusses and minuses of pinhole cameras are discussed in this book. He covers all forms of shutters. Range finders. Dual-lens cameras. Everything. If you are looking for an understanding of different cameras and their pros & cons, this is the book to get.

About the Author
Michael Whitman, Ph.D., CISM, CISSP is a Professor of Information Security at Kennesaw State University, Kennesaw, Georgia, where he is also the Executive Director of the KSU/Coles College of Business Center for Information Security Education. In 2004, 2007, 2012 and 2015, under his direction the Center for Information Security Education spearheaded KSU's successful bid for the prestigious National Center of Academic Excellence recognitions (CAE/IAE and CAE IA/CD) awarded by the Department of Homeland Security and the National Security Agency. Dr. Whitman is also the Editor-in-Chief of the Information Security Education Journal, and Director of the Southeast Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition. Dr. Whitman is an active researcher and author in Information Security Policy, Threats, and Curriculum Development, as well as Ethical Computing. He currently teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in Information Security. Dr. Mattord is an active researcher and author in Information Security Management and related topics. He has published articles in the Information Resources Management Journal, Journal of Information Security Education, the Journal of Executive Education, and the International Journal of Interdisciplinary Telecommunications and Networking. Dr. Mattord is a member of the Information Systems Security Association, ISACA, and the Association for Information Systems. During his career as an IT practitioner, Dr. Mattord was an adjunct professor at Kennesaw State University, Southern Polytechnic State University in Marietta, Georgia, Austin Community College in Austin, Texas, and Texas State University: San Marcos. He was formerly the Manager of Corporate Information Technology Security at Georgia-Pacific Corporation, where much of the practical knowledge found in this and other textbooks was acquired.

Andrew Green, M.S.I.S., is a lecturer of information security and assurance in the CSIS department at Kennesaw State University and a research associate with the KSU Center for Information Security Education and Awareness. He was also one of the principal designers of the Southeast Collegiate Cyberdefense Competition, hosted annually by KSU. Before entering academia full-time, Green worked for 10 years as an information security professional, primarily as a consultant to small and medium-sized businesses, as well as a healthcare IT specialist. In the latter role, he developed and supported transcription interfaces for medical facilities throughout the United States. Green is also a full-time Ph.D. student at Nova Southeastern University, where he is studying information systems with a concentration in information security, as well as the co-author of multiple books published by Course Technology.

About the Author
Laurence Maslon is an arts professor in the Graduate Acting Program at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts. The author or editor of several books about musical theater, including The South Pacific Companion, he co-wrote two episodes of the Emmy-winning Broadway: The American Musical with Michael Kantor, as well as the companion volume. He also wrote the acclaimed American Masters/Thirteen documentary Richard Rodgers: The Sweetest Sounds. He lives in New York.

If you love great musicals you won't be able to bypass this wonderful collection, in two volumes, of the complete book and lyrics of sixteen iconic American musicals. No excuses now for not getting the words right when you accompany your favourite Broadway performers in their renditions via CD or LP. Packed into a nice sturdy box with some postcards incorporating art from the original productions thrown in for collectors, this is an important publishing event which will have readers crying out for more as there are numerous other classic shows that deserve this sort of appreciation.
At the back of each volume are extensive biographical notes on the authors of these noteworthy works plus Broadway Production Notes, additional lyrics, a nice selection of photos and art work from each show plus a comprehensive and invaluable section of explanatory notes giving each musical a very thorough and meaningful history for contemporary readers.

For the past 50 years, Wendell Perry's life has revolved around astrology, art and finding an answer to the age-old question, what do we need to do to earn our keep in this vast and wonderful universe? Having studied astrology for over 35 years, he is imparting his knowledge to other aspiring astrologers and enthusiasts through his writings. He is the co-author (along with his wife, Linda) of "The Mars Venus Affair: Astrology's Sexiest Planets" (Llewellyn, 2000) and "Saturn Cycles: Mapping Changes in Your Life" (Llewellyn, 2009). Perry is a frequent contributor to The Mountain Astrologer magazine and Dell Horoscope, and he writes about pop culture and current events on his popular website, GoodGollyAstrology.com. Get get this book!! This is the definitive book on sun/moon signs. This book blows away the former champ Heaven Knows What by Grant Lewi. Mr. Perry's writing is crisp and positive and you will be astounded by his accuracy. Can't recommend this book enough!!!

This book has twice as many pages as the first edition and includes research results from a recently conducted major pipeline project. This book is essential for pipe installers, pipe designers, geotechnical engineers and engineering geologists.

Pipeline Installation 2.0 is the second edition of Pipeline Installation, which was first published in 1996. The 2015 Pipeline Installation 2.0 edition includes new chapters, more illustrations, updated content, additional topics, and links to online resources. The second edition also includes case histories related to the author’s experiences. It covers the fundamentals of pipe-soil interaction as related to the construction of a buried pipeline. All types of pipe are discussed. From unloading the pipe at the construction site to final testing for acceptance, each step in the installation sequence is reviewed in detail.

Proper selection of soil type and compaction level for the soil support system for both rigid and flexible pipe is discussed, along with the appropriate soil testing requirements and standards. Inspection check lists are included throughout the book for use by on-site inspectors as a guide for proper installation procedures. The book emphasizes that a buried pipe is a soil-pipe interaction problem. The solution is the best combination of pipe strength and soil support that results in an efficient, economical, and enduring pipeline. Then, the pipeline must be constructed as designed to be successful. This book promotes proper installation practices.

Easily a 5 star book! Great information on soil compaction/density.

This is a wonderful book. I am a pipeline engineer and am working with installation/burial instructions frequently. I purchased this book back in June and just recently finished it in August. It has great information with fun illustrations. Chapters 4 & 5 on soil density and compaction are the best I have found in any book, and chapter 15 on flowable fill is great current information that is very important as many pipelines are using flowable fill for haunch support. Easily a 5 star book!
