About the Author
Scott W. Ambler is a senior consultant of Ronin International, Inc., a software services consulting firm that specializes in software process improvement, mentoring, and training. He is also founder and thought leader of the Agile Modeling (AM) methodology and the Enterprise Unified Process (EUP). He is a popular international speaker, a regular columnist for Software Development magazine, and the award-winning author of several books, including The Object Primer 3/e, Agile Modeling, and Agile Database Techniques.

Clarifying the "What, When, Why and How" of OO Development

I probably purchased somewhere upwards of twenty books on the topics of the UML and object-oriented development before buying The Object Primer, 2nd Edition. Yeah, it probably would have been nice to have read this one first, but on the other hand, it may have been just the right book at the right time in terms of my learning process. As a result of my previous efforts, I was getting overwhelmed and confused by the sheer volume of concepts, notations, diagrams, development processes, and tools associated with becoming proficient with UML modeling and object-oriented development. While I had learned lots of important terminology and techniques from the previous books, I found The Object Primer to be enormously practical and useful in terms of putting it all together and breaking through to a working level of proficiency.
Among the aspects of the book that I appreciated are it's easy-to-read style, effective use of diagrams and visual examples, and the "techniques" sections with clear directives about what to do, and what not to do, in specific areas. I was able to use the technique lists in somewhat of a cookbook style as I applied what I was learning to some of my own work.
So far, in my growing library of OO development books, this one provides the "biggest bang for the buck".

Actually much more than just an object primer!

This is a great book! Not that it's perfect, but nothing is. This book is not only a very clear, extremely well-organized approach to learning and/or becoming expert in "Object Orientation and the UML," as the the cover says, but he presents this together with a development methodology that makes a *lot* of sense. For example, for those of you who have read Karl Wiegers' excellent "Software Requirements," did you notice that at the end of the book you knew exactly what good requirements are but not how to get there? Me too! But Ambler takes you on a whirlwind tour, with each page absolutely *packed* with value, that instead leaves you saying "hey, now I know not only what good object oriented designs are, but how to get there from here!"
This is a strange thing to say, but this book actually gave me the requirements engineering methodology I needed to get from point A to B -- having requirements that Karl Wiegers would be proud of!

This guy is good! The OO comes before the UML.

OO came first and then came UML to model it! This book is all about the principles of object-oriented requirements, analysis, and design first and secondly about the UML tools for modeling these steps in project development. That's as it should be since OO is the thing most to be admired, and UML is (just) a popular and very useful language for modeling OO development. Too many UML books are so intent on UML that the fundamentals of OO are ignored. The first edition of this book was published in 1995 just before UML was born. Its author, Scott Ambler, is a prolific and renowned writer and developer.
The book has many detailed UML diagrams and is clearly written in a pleasant, professional style. The book is not about implementation. Look elsewhere for sample code, including some of Ambler's fine other publications.
Don't be lislead by the word "Primer" in the title. It's for the serious reader and would make a good text, but for a junior or senior level CS course. If you are a professional and could have just two references in your library for your first OO project, this 523-page book together with a good programming reference (Java, C++, C#, or VB.NET) would be a good choice.

The majority of this book is quotes pulled straight from Grossman's article The Connector: How Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg rewired our world and changed the way we live: A short biography of TIME's 2010 Person of the Year and the useful parts are a strict subset of said article. The book also has an inane section of attempted original conclusions containing platitudes and famous, largely irrelevant quotes (like stuff Gandhi said etc), stuff thankfully not included in Grossman's article. Although this book is only 2 dollars, I'd shell out the extra $2 to get Grossman's article or perhaps read it free online. If you don't have time for the real article, then this is a faster read at 33 pages. This work doesn't include original research and is a compilation of others' words.

This book is about what we go thru in order to have the perfect life. She was CEO. A workaholic. Always putting the job first. Always having an image to uphold. That's why her personal life was a variation of what a real relationship should have been. She was comfortable with comfortable. A man who cheated. Was immature an image. Then she decided to step outside the box. To improve her relationship to keep her man interested. She gets a tutor. Not just any tutor. A sexual tutor. And sparks fly

Total Miss For Me

I usually like Lucia Jordan's books--I've bought a ton of them over the past few months. I think the aspect that turned me off completely was the fact that she said "Autumn" (the main character's name) 606 times. In a 90 page book (removing the title page, table of contents, etc), that equals to almost seven uses per page, every page. It was so annoying! Even in a scene where the main character was alone, she continued using "Autumn" instead of simply saying "she" or "her." It doesn't sound like a big deal, but you will definitely understand where I'm coming from once you read it.
My second issue was the fact that Autumn and Mark (the love interest) rarely spent any time together. The only times they met was when they had sex (which I think a total of 3 or 4 times) before they both realized they were in 'love' with other. It was odd and a little forced.
This was my least favorite book I've read from this author and I'm so glad it was 'gifted' to me because it wouldn't have been worth paying for. Do yourself a favor and read "Get Naked" by this same author. It's so much better.

About the Author

Guido Schwarzer is a senior statistician and head of IT at the Institute for Medical Biometry and Statistics at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg, Germany. He is an established researcher in the area of meta-analysis and lead statistician of several Cochrane reviews. His special interests are in small-study effects in meta-analysis and statistical computing. Guido Schwarzer is an author of the R packages meta, metasens, and netmeta.

James Carpenter studied mathematics at Warwick University and statistics at Oxford University. His principal interests are coping with missing data in complex hierarchical models, sensitivity analysis and meta-analysis, with applications to medical and social data. The collaboration that led to this book began during a sabbatical at Freiburg in 2005–6. James Carpenter is Professor of Medical Statistics at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, and Programme Leader in Methodology at the MRC Clinical Trials Unit, London.

Gerta Rücker is a mathematician, working at the Institute for Medical Biometry and Statistics at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg, Germany. After having published in chemical graph theory for a number of years, she started working in biostatistics, particularly meta-analysis. Her principal interests are small-study effects and heterogeneity in meta-analysis, meta-analysis of diagnostic accuracy studies and application of graph theory in network meta-analysis. She has published a large number of methodological research papers, co-authored a number of Cochrane reviews and is an author of the R package netmeta.

Practical and concise introduction to useful tools to make meta-analysis with R.

This book cover mainly the meta package. Gives the mathematical approach and then give you the commands to make those complicated formulas with simple code in R using the meta package. As a clinician this book has been absolutely useful to perform a full meta-analysis. The first part introduces the reader to R. The second part cover the standards methods for met-analysis (continuos, binary outcomes) and the third part includes small-study meta-analysis, dealing with missing data, multivariate and network meta-analysis, and diagnostic meta-analysis.

No information about graphical representation of results is included.

Recommended for anyone interested in perform a meta-analysis with the meta package or manually. Also of interest is the metafor package.

Dec 2016. After having read it and use a lot, I found this book practical to start and do a meta-analisis. Still I miss some information about how to report (graph and personlized tables), but overall I found every day more useful. One star +.

It's an okay book. Not the best book out there.

This book is great for any one who's looking to challenge them selves for the test. However I wouldn't recommend this to beginner's because the book only gives you problems and answers. This book does not go into detail about how or why a certain answer is that answer.

Was not happy as now I'm wondering how many of the other ...

I ordered this book and while reading through it noticed that there are tons of spelling errors and words in sentences that don't make sense. Also found that the assembling objects section test, the first 5 answers on the answer key were incorrect. Was not happy as now I'm wondering how many of the other answers in this book are incorrect. Not happy about spending $24 for a book to help me get a better score on the ASVAB to help get a decent MOS in the military and the book is not very professional when words are misspelled and misused.

Design considerations for these exchangers are also discussed. The text concludes with a chapter of term projects that may be undertaken by teams of students.

About the Author
Dr. William S. Janna is a Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Memphis. He has served as Department Chair at U of Memphis from 1987-1991. He served also as Associate Dean for Graduate Studies and Research (1999-2003). Previously, he served as Department Chair at the University of New Orleans, where he was employed from 1976 to 1987. Dr. Janna has written three textbooks, as well as several laboratory manuals. He was a member of The American Society for Engineering Education, and currently serves as web master for the Mechanical Engineering Division. He is also a member of ASME. Dr. Janna is committed to improving undergraduate engineering education, and to the sharing of information that will produce better engineers. His current research interests include flow in piping systems, heat and mass transfer from melting ice objects, flow over a sublimating flat plate, and design of fluid-thermal systems. He teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in the areas of thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and heat transfer.
