Very interesting and fun book!

One of my dearest friends is Mike Fay and is mentioned in the book. It's fun to see the music revolution that was going on in India at the same time we were experiencing the British Invasion and blending blues and rock in the US. Anyone who loves music and is excited by the history and evolution of "our generation" of music will love this book.

I find myself referring to this book again and again. I always recommend it as an introduction to the Alexander technique. It assisted me greatly when I was first taking Alexander lessons. It is still valuable years later as I refresh and review. Easy to read, entertaining, cogent, and reflective. It reads almost as though you were having conversation with Mr. Gelb. If I had to use one book to introduce a new person to the Alexander technique, theory and understanding, this would be the one.

Prevent Backaches!

Gelb writes very clearly, with good illustrations describing F. M. Alexander's technique for good body use. Many actors, singers, and dancers use this technique, and many people who suffer from joint and muscle disabilities can benefit from this book. Gelb's personal experiences help the reader to understand how to benefit from the techniques and exercises he describes.

Clear, Informative, Inspiring

I started practicing the Alexander Technique over the last couple months. My teacher "assigned" me this book to read, as part of our work together. It's an outstanding book. It's very clear and easy to read. Gelb offers many anecdotal stories and quotes and other stuff like that to make it more enjoyable and inspiring. He tells the fascinating story of how Dr. Alexander developed the technique. Then he proceeds to give a clear and practical explanation of all the different aspects of the technique. I learned a lot!

You are not your debt

Being in debt is lonely and mind numbing, but it doesn’t have to be. Dear Debt is a story of one woman on a journey getting out of $81,000 of debt, without living with her parents or making six figures. She launched a new career and money mindset in the process

The beginning of the book frequently mentions the psychological and societal attitude towards debt. A super important discussion that doesn't happen near enough in personal finance, which makes me glad it was included in the book. People, starting when they’re teenagers and signing for their first set of student loans, are led to believe debt is a normal thing and not something to worry about. Everyone’s doing it. Melanie talks about how she broke free from the perspective and took charge of her debt situation.

Melanie went through college and graduate school pursuing various creative endeavors in theater and the arts. She got her bachelor’s degree in theater and master’s degree in performance studies. Because of her activities in the creative field and non-profit work experience, she thought she was destined to a path of low wages and struggle.

Many people have similar mindsets to where she was at. They think they will never be able to reach financial independence or be in charge of their money due to their situation. The book breaks down different steps on moving past a limiting money mindset to developing a proactive view towards money.

Money is not good or bad. Money is simply a tool for opportunities. The book covers how to get started with side hustles: strategy, building your brand and dealing with things like taxes. Lots of helpful practical advice.

The biggest lesson from the book about money and debt is shifting your money mindset. We all have a unique mindset when it comes to money: the way we view saving, making more, and spending triggers. Mindsets and bad habits can be remedied and improved upon. Changing your money mindset is arguably the most important thing towards staying motivated to eliminate debt and achieve your financial goals.

Debt is a Terrible "Lover"

So here's the thing, we all know that getting out of debt is simple: spend less than you make and use the excess to pay off debt. Easy, right? Not so fast. There's this little monkey-wrench called emotion. It's the main reason we get into debt and stay there. What I LOVE about Melanie's account on attaining debt freedom is that it personifies debt exposing the terrible, abusive "lover" that it can be in our lives. Who can't relate to that? Once you see the addictive, unhealthy debt mentality for what and "who" it is, it makes it even easier to make the commitment to "break-up" with debt. What's more is that it includes LOTS of information on why adding extra income can only help you in this journey. I respect the coupon clippers, but I realize there's a lot of value in increasing your skill set and demanding more money for your time and experience. I read this book from cover to cover in one sitting as it's truly engaging and inspiring. Add this to your collection of debt-free, inspiring stories!

If you want to get out of debt, the easiest way to keep going is to be inspired by those who've already done it. Melanie has achieved one hell of a feat and her advice is VERY practical and doable if you REALLY want to get out of debt. She proved it and so will I!

The best available introduction to OE poetry for beginners.

Old English poetry is hard to translate for a variey of reasons. OE poetic style is very compact, very nominal and very dense.Accurate translations often seem wordy; "poetic" ones tend to miss a lot. This is the only book currently available ( as far as I know) which provides a selection of OE poems in a bilingual format. I have used this book in teaching; the translations are pretty good and the OE is right there for the curious. A good and very handy book.

Highly Recommend To The OE Reader

My Old English class in college was the most laborious of them all especially as my textbook was stolen, which had an extensive glossary. This book helped smooth out the rough edges of my translations and just gave me a better sense of how to put the words together in some coherent form. It's a nice collection of the most well known OE verses and poems and should prove interesting to the non-student who is interested in very old poetry and etymology as well.

The literature of pagan and post-pagan England - beautifully translated

This slim paperback provides a gripping and powerful and wonderfully translated sampler of Anglo-Saxon literature. It provides the reader's imagination with a vivid intuitive understanding of the mindset of the Anglo-Saxons before and following their conversion to Christianity. This is the poetry that was written in "Old English" or "Anglo-Saxon" [ though both terms are inaccurate and misleading; indeed, scholars will pick holes even in the very concept of the Anglo-Saxons..... but let's just enjoy their poetry!! ]

While there is a Christian gloss on most of these very powerful and very moving poems, they still inhabit, in good measure, the vanished pagan (non-Christian) world of the great hero, tough and strong and stern and resolute, driven only by honour and nobility, and not all self-regarding, who stoically endures incredible and prolonged hardships; that mighty and war-hardened man who wins everlasting fame and renown through his great deeds of prowess.
In these poems, while there is a sense of the transitoriness of life, and the vanity of fame and earthly achievement, as is dutifully required by Christian Theology, and there is expression of deep regret for the loss of the noble lord and his splendid retinue of noble retainers, all of them now buried deep in the Earth and dead forever, there is still a lot of the "old religion" and the old pre-Christian world of the War Band to be found in these poems; the great and noble lord & king who is loved as a father by his men, giving generous gifts to them, as they feast and drink in his hall, hearing tales of noble deeds, and ever planning new raids on surrounding kingdoms.

Here we find some of the imaginative wellsprings that inspired Professor Tolkien to use his extraordinary imagination to create his own brilliant powerful and poetic myth for the English people (the Lord of The Rings, and the history of Middle Earth).

Suffice it to say that if you are interested in England before the Norman conquest and after the departure of the Roman legions, you will find great enjoyment in reading this book.

Richard Hamer's translations from the Anglo-Saxon are powerful and poetic, and far more enjoyable to read than some of the stilted academic translations of this material, as can be illustrated by the following passage he has translated from "The Wanderer" : :

" Where is the horse now, where the hero gone?
Where is the bounteous lord, and where the benches
For feasting? Where are all the joys of hall?
Alas for the bright cup, the armoured warrior,
The glory of the prince. That time is over,
Passed into night as it had never been. "

About the Author
Dr. Allemang is a member of the faculty of the Mechanical Engineering Program in the School of Dynamic Systems, University of Cincinnati, where he currently also serves as Director of the Structural Dynamics Research Laboratory (UC-SDRL). Dr. Allemang has been actively involved in the area of experimental modal analysis for over 35 years, pioneering the use of multiple input, multiple output estimation of frequency response functions, developing the concept of cyclic averaging, formulating the modal assurance criterion (MAC) and the enhanced frequency response function and reformulating modal parameter estimation algorithms into the unified matrix (coefficient) polynomial approach (UMPA). He has authored or co-authored over 140 technical articles, including chapters for 2 different handbooks and numerous refereed articles.Peter Avitabile is the Director of the Modal Analysis and Controls Laboratory at the University of Massachusetts, Lowell and Professor in the Mechanical Engineering Department. Dr. Avitable joined the University in 1985 after having worked in industry for over 10 years. His industrial and university experience of over 30 years includes analytical and experimental modal analysis, signal processing and finite element modeling. His main area of research is structural dynamics specializing in the areas of modeling, testing and correlation of analytical and experimental models along with advanced applications for developing structural dynamic models.

Surreal.

I found this to be the most surreal book in the series. Maybe even the most imaginative. I love the idea of two worlds combining, resulting in changed landscapes and people. The book was a lot of fun to read, though Farland continues his annoying habits of omnipotent narration and not italicizing characters' thoughts. At one point, late in the book, he jumps between three different character POVs in just a few paragraphs. It left my head spinning, and not in a good way. Other than those complaints, I'm in love with this series.

I've read this entire series and I have to say that I liked the first couple of books much better than the the last ones. The story is not very cohesive from book to book after the first four. After the fourth book each one introduces entirely new characters that may have little or nothing to do with the previous book. Each book ends with too many unfinshed issues. Generally the first four books in this series is really well written and intersting, after that not so much.

Fantastic

Yet another fine entry into the runelords saga. This one follows Sons of The Oak and takes a fantastic plot delve of worldbinding proportions. If you enjoyed Sons of The Oak (the first of the new Fallion-led storyline) then this one is a must read. I just finished it last night and I've already started Wyrmling Horde because I was so hooked into the story. Its a nice piece.

About the Author

David Grembowski, Ph.D., M.A., is a professor in the Department of Health Ser- vices in the School�of Public Health and the Department of Oral Health Sciences in the School of Dentistry, and adjunct�professor in the Department of Sociology, at the University of Washington. He has taught health�program evaluation to graduate students for more than twenty years. His evaluation interests are�prevention, the performance of health programs and health care systems, survey research methods,�and the social determinants of population health. There are better evaluation books out there

Unfortunately, the better program evaluation books also cost significantly more. This book gives a decent overview of health program evaluation and provides basic information that is essential to this important field. However, it is not well-written or well-organized, which detracts considerably from the book's worth. I used it as a student in an evaluation course, and even the instructor didn't care for the book and based our exams off of class lectures rather than the book itself. The authors should go back and review this book and produce a new edition that is better organized, doesn't rely on the same 2-3 examples throughout the book, and uses figures and tables more effectively. If you can afford to pay more for another evaluation book, it would be well worth it.

This text on Program Eval is solid

This text outlines a comprehensive approach to program evaluation and provides an excellent college-level resource for training competent health program evaluators. Grant writers may particularly find it helpful in designing convincing program evaluation strategies to impress funders, though the text does not especially target that audience. The text's content is laid out in three sections: Asking the Question (the evaluation question, that is), Answering the Question, and Using the Answer for Decision-making. The text benefits from the tracking of health program examples during its discussion of a comprehensive list of evaluation concepts, techniques, and challenges, such as: target population identification, unintended program consequences, cost-benefit/effectiveness analysis, multiple times series design, a very detailed discussion of pre and post tests, etc., etc. Admittedly, the text at times delves into complex statistical details relating to program evaluation (e.g., it's section on disproportionate stratified sampling), and these may be beyond the college student who lacks a prior course in statistics. Nevertheless, these mathematically complex sections can be used as nonrequired reference sections in most college courses without any crucial loss from the text's benefit to the average future program evaluator. Probably the only 'weakness' in this text is one that is due to the subject matter, not due to the author's efforts, for program evaluation, like the related topics of grantmanship and health policy development, is an endeavor that does not easily fall into any intuitive outline. The author has used a pretty good over-arching format with his "asking the question" approach, but the fact is that any book on this topic will necessarily seem somewhat disjointed to the reader compared to books on topics like algebra, fleas, or the history of the chariot.
