About the Author
Peter H. Zipfel is a graduate of the University Stuttgart, Germany, and the Catholic University of America with a Ph.D. in aerospace engineering. He founded Modeling and Simulation Technologies, which advises and instructs functional integration of aerospace systems using computer simulations. For 35 years he taught courses in modeling and simulation, guidance and control, and flight dynamics at the University of Florida, and over the span of fifty years he created aerospace simulations of helicopters, missiles, aircraft, and hypersonic vehicles for the German Helicopter Institute, the U.S. Army, and U.S. Air Force. He is an AIAA Associate Fellow and an internationally recognized short course instructor.

I have always enjoyed Mercedes Lackey's fantasy work but here she captures the true essence of CAT and goes to outer space. Any person owned by a feline will tell you that Cats remember being worshiped as Creatures Blessed By Gods ;if not Gods themselves, and here is a Human who has written what is to them a True story. You will find this a most enjoyable read.

I read the first Shipscat story in a collection and loved it immediately. I was ecstatic when I saw I could get all four of them in one place. I just wish Mercedes Lackey would write more of their adventures.

Great Tidbits

This collection is quality Mercedes Lackey. Each part is short, but packed with interesting plot, sympathetic characters, and situations. All deal with the same story.

The central character is a race of genetically modified cats who can be trained to assist humans on spaceship journeys. Some are even telepathic. The ship has landed on a newfound planet that has a "small" pest problem. The solution - cats! True "ratters" solve the planet's problems, but even after instituting trade for as many modified cats as can be supplied to the aliens, the crew faces trouble from both human and alien enemies.

Ms Lackey uses these shorts to take the reader on a truly captivating trip to a new world on a spaceship cleaned by a race of genetically engineered "shipcats" to establish trade relations with an alien race. And we care about both the shipcats and their handlers! This is the work of a skilled author!

Just about every other person in the world seems like an unfocused dilettante compared to long-distance swimming legend Lynne Cox. Soon At the age of 14, after several years of training hard in pools and the open sea, she was swimming the 26 mile stretch from Catalina Island to the coast of California. A year after that, she surpassed a lifelong goal by not only swimming the English Channel but setting a new men's and women's record in the process. Rather than be satisfied, Cox aimed still higher, conquering the Cook Strait in New Zealand, the Strait of Magellan and, the Cape of Good Hope, none of which had been swum before. Being the first to swim the Bering Sea from Alaska to what was then the Soviet Union is perhaps Cox's most impressive achievement, requiring a phenomenal amount of physical strength and endurance to withstand the chilly waters and diplomatic persistence to gain permission from Gorbachev during the Cold War. Swimming to Antarctica is Cox's remarkably detailed account of her major swims and all that went right and wrong with them. While there are plenty of highs, as one might expect in a memoir by so impressive an athlete, all is not sunshine and roses for Cox. She overcomes extreme physical hardship, predatory sharks, and a swim through a sewage-soaked Nile while suffering from dysentery. Cox, one of the world's leading long-distance swimmers, has been a risk-taker ever since she was nine and chose the freezing water of a New Hampshire pool in a storm over getting out and doing calisthenics. After her family moved to California so she and her siblings could train as speed swimmers, she discovered long-distance ocean swimming. Her first open-water event, a team race across the Catalina Channel, convinced her to train for the English Channel. At 15, she broke the Channel record, and decided she needed a new goal. Up to this point, Cox's story reads like a fairy tale of hard work, careful planning and good support, crowned with success. It isn't until she competes in the Nile River swim that the tale turns ugly-she's swimming in raw sewage and chemical waste, fending off the dead rats and broken glass, so sick with dysentery she lands in the hospital. Undeterred, she plans more ambitious swims-around the shark-infested Cape of Good Hope, across Alaska's Glacier Bay-to prepare for her big dream, a swim from Alaska to the Soviet Union across the Bering Strait. While offering herself to researchers studying the effects of cold on the human body, her political goals are even larger: to bring countries and peoples together, using swimming "to establish bridges between borders." Cox ends her story with her swim to Antarctica, where she finishes the first Antarctic mile in 32-degree water in 25 minutes. Even though readers know she survived to tell the tale, it's a thrilling, awesome and well-written story.

As this inspiring memoir makes clear, swimming is Cox's life. "Cox is not just in the sea," notes the Rocky Mountain News, "she is one with it." Cox offers intimate glimpses into her mind as she conquers icy (Antarctic) or rat-strewn (Nile) waters--her doubts, joys, and observations of unfamiliar surroundings. It's a compelling narrative, but critics disagree on a few points. Is her writing poetic or reportorial? Does she offer a complete or one-sided picture of her life? Where's the larger historical perspective? Quibbles aside, Cox successfully and joyfully captures the mental, physical, and political (think: America, Russia, Bering Strait) battles she overcomes each time she jumps into new waters. "As far as I knew," she writes, "I would only be here once, and I wanted to live as much as I could."

Focus on the accomplishment, not the pain

Lynne Cox is such an inspirational writer that the reader concentrates on her exceptional accomplishments, both physical and mental, rather than the extreme pain and struggle it took to accomplish them. From her early teens, Cox has eliminated almost everything else from her life to dedicate herself to open-water swims in treacherous and freezing waters, including crossing the Bering Straight between Alaska and the Soviet Union, and swimming a mile in the Antarctic Ocean.

What I really loved about this book is the way Cox struggled not only with the physical challenges of the swims but also struggled to make the swims mean something more to the world at large. For example, the Bering Straight swim took something lik 16 years of meetings and negotiations to arrange, hundreds of donors and volunteers. But in the end that swim stood as a testament and metaphor for the improving connections between nations. Everywhere she goes, Cox seems to have inspired anyone fortunate enough to witness her. That this has come with a great deal of personal sacrifice--money troubles, social limitations, significant nerve damage--is humbly underplayed in the book. She has a kind of determination and self-confidence that transcends a particular athletic endeavour.

That Cox does not *look* like anyone's idea of an endurance athlete just adds to the inspiration -- she's 45 and she's swimming to Antarctica...so what's MY excuse?

Very cold bath

As a chubby nine-year-old, Lynne Cox was the slowest kid in the pool. But she loved swimming, so she kept plugging away at it. When the coach ordered her class out of the water because a storm was brewing, she got permission to keep swimming. When hail started falling, Cox kept swimming-alone-in a pool full of ice.

Scientists would later determine that her unique ratio of muscle to body fat made her anomalously suited to swimming long distances in water so cold, it would kill an ordinary swimmer within minutes. At 15, Cox swam the English Channel, breaking the world record. The next year, she went back to England and broke the record again.

It would be a mistake to think that Cox's new autobiography, Swimming to Antarctica: Tales of a Long-Distance Swimmer, is of interest only to swimmers. In fact, the book has more in common with heroic literature of the ancient world-like Beowulf and The Odyssey-than with the typical athlete's success story. Like those ancient heroes, Cox isn't satisfied with races that have a designated course. Instead, she looks for unique athletic challenges that only she can overcome. That's why, at 17, she fell out of love with channel swimming and, instead, took on the unknown-swimming icy lakes, straits and channels that had been thought impossible for a swimmer to breach. Her famous 1987 swim across the Bering Sea from Alaska to the Soviet Union took 10 years to plan, and the water, in August, was barely above freezing.

Although Cox isn't a professional writer, she has a keen eye for details that turn an important life experience into an entertaining story. Readers will be amused, for instance, by the English cab driver who told Cox she was too fat to swim the Channel-as he was driving her to the beach for that express purpose.

While other athletes were wooed by corporate sponsors, Cox had to finance her own projects. Her story is a powerful account of clinging hard to a bigger dream.

Four Stars for the Author, One Star for the Editor

As an avid swimmer and reader,this book was a bit of a disappointment for me. I truly admire the author's determination and swimming prowess but her character emerges as one dimensional, which I'm sure it is not. There is little reference to her non-swimming life. Am I to believe, for example, that she never had any romantic relationships all those years? Was her life entirely about long distance swimming? Where is she today, in her mid-forties?

I was also disappointed by the fact that there are no photos or maps ! How is that possible in such a book?

Also, I feel that least 50 pages of the current edition could have been dropped. I would like to have read more about Ms. Cox's training, nutrition, etc. I don't even know what she looks like (height, weight).

In short: good story, bad editor.

Fantastic, well-tuned book

This book is remarkable. It covers nearly all the basics, without going into unnecessary depth, and therefore is very appropriate for board exam purposes, and also, to gain a quick, well-tuned footing on the basics of nuclear medicine. It is not as extensive as the book by Cherry, Sorenson and Phelps, and actually that is its strength, as it still captures nearly all things relevant.

Not for Serious Language Students

This dictionary is primarily for tourists. It was not designed for language study. If you're trying to converse or translate, it is a poor tool. Although it attempts to use latin script, some letters are substituted which makes deciphering a bit slow until you get used to it. If you find yourself in Baku you might be able to survive with this dictionary in your pocket.

Excellent for those looking for the basics.

I picked up this book on a whim, since I speak Turkish and wanted to learn Azerbaijani. I was pleasantly surprised to find not only words and phrases, but introductions to the alphabet, fairly thorough grammar, and loads of useful and very usable words and phrases. Awde is a great linguist, as well, I have picked up several excellent books by him on many subjects an find his work to be very reliable. I highly recommend this book.

Extremely Flawed, but Better than Nothing

There are very basic errors. I found out several days into a trip that what this book told me meant "Thank you" was actually a very formal "Goodbye", and some phrases weren't recognized by native speakers.

My biggest complaint is that they screwed with the alphabet. Azerbaijani is already written in an alphabet any English speaker will recognize and will be able to learn in a few minutes. The one they substituted is no more familiar, but much more complicated. It also makes this book not very useful for translating written Azerbaijani and all but useless for passing back and forth when pronunciation fails.

Yes, it's not for serious language study. It's a phrasebook, not an intensive grammar. It's only meant to facilitate basic communication when you don't speak the local language. Sadly, the previous flaws prevent this.

I would strongly recommend finding a substitute if you can, but there isn't really much out there. There are a few online resources you can study ahead of time- both print and audio/video. I'll probably print those out for my next trip instead of this, but I may purchase Colloquial Azerbaijani by Kurtulus Oztopcu.

Wayne Dyer Is Inspired by Goddard

I am long-time fan and follower of Wayne Dyer. Every new book that Wayne writes, and he writes profusely, I have to see where he has put himself on the path toward Enlightenment. Each book, I noticed, is a step toward that ultimate goal. And each book freely appends and borrows ideas and concepts from
those who have preceded him, like Lao Tse and Neville Goddard. There is nothing inherently wrong about this, and Wayne freely admits his indebtedness
to those sages and avatars of the past. In Wayne's new book and NPR broadcasts expounding on it, Wishes Fulfilled, he quotes Neville Goddard liberally.
I have to admit that despite my broad reading and devouring of books on spirituality/Buddhism/religion, etc., I had somehow missed Goddard. That is why I turned to the Power of Awareness. It's a remarkable work with clearly defined path of how to attain that state of awareness that we soul-searchers pine for. Yes, no doubt Wayne borrows freely from Goddard and it is most evident in his espousal of the power of imagination and the "I am" concepts. Goddard's volume is a goldmine of pithy and pertinent quotations from the Bible (mostly) and from other germane sources. It is certainly easier to read and digest than the volumes of David R. Hawkins, though Hawkins' work is far superior in its breadth and depth. All said and done, I recommend reading Goddard, then skipping over to Wayne Dyer's new work to note the comparisons and differences. It's very "enlightening."

His research focuses on two major subjects: Islamic origins and uniquely American forms of Islam. He has written several articles and a book on Elijah Muhammad and the Nation of Islam.
